If studies are unable to continue, we call for animals used in research to be rehomed not killed
With worrying reports from other countries of laboratories taking the decision to kill animals, we have asked the UK government what is happening to animals in laboratories there during the period of emergency measures.
We are calling for a guarantee of care and protection for the millions of animals in laboratories who face uncertain futures during the pandemic.
We want an assurance that laboratory inspectors will continue to monitor the treatment of animals during this time. Government inspections are key in making sure laws to protect the welfare of animals used in research are properly followed.
We also want official guidance given to laboratories to stop any reduction in care for animals in laboratories if staff are self-isolating, sick, working from home or on fewer hours. Where studies are being put on hold, we are urging laboratories to make every effort to rehome animals instead of killing them.
Dr Katy Taylor, our Director of Science and Regulatory Affairs, said: “We’re sure we aren’t alone in raising concerns about how animals in laboratories are being considered at this difficult time. It’s important we don’t forget about those who can’t protect themselves, and that includes the millions of animals used in research both in the UK and around the world. The government needs to ensure animals being used in research are not overlooked, and that where experiments have been put on hold, animals are rehomed wherever possible.”
