We prevent gruesome chemical company animal tests
Thousands of tests on animals proposed by chemical companies have been avoided thanks to us.
Under the EU chemicals law REACH, companies have to prove their chemicals are safe. Sadly, that means many want to carry out tests on animals.
Before carrying out some of these cruel animal tests, they have to send a proposal to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). These proposals are then made public for 45 days. For several years along with our European partners we have helped to provide scientific evidence that the tests should not be done, all thanks to life-saving donations from generous supporters.
Our scientists have recently analysed the results of all this work and are pleased to announce the expert feedback we have given ECHA has so far stopped over 35,000 animals from suffering and dying in these unnecessary tests.
This work along with other legal and scientific successes over the past five years means that we have helped save an estimated 60,000 animals from cruel chemical tests in Europe.
Dr Katy Taylor, Director of Science and Regulatory Affairs at Cruelty Free International, said: “We are delighted that to date, our comments were successful in 50 testing proposals, saving an estimated minimum of 35,000 animals from cruel and unnecessary suffering. Our experts were able to show in these cases that the proposed tests weren’t legally required or scientifically necessary. In some cases we found that data for the chemical already existed.”
