Member of the U.S. House of Representatives wins our monthly award

US Representative Martha McSally has been awarded our Legislator of the Month award for June 2018. Each month, we nominate a lawmaker as the Legislator/Parliamentarian of the Month, to celebrate the work these individuals do for animals. This month Representative Martha McSally (R-AZ), who receives her award for her leadership on the US Humane Cosmetics Act [HR 2790].

Previous recipients of this award have included parliamentarians from governments across Europe. Representative McSally is the first US lawmaker to receive this award.

The Humane Cosmetics Act would phase out the use of animal-based testing for cosmetic products in the U.S. and eventually prohibit the sale of cosmetics tested on animals in foreign countries, making sure that only safe products, tested with cutting-edge technology, enter the American market.

We were delighted to present Rep McSally with this award at her Washington DC office. We are always thrilled to honour politicians and lawmakers who show concern for animal welfare, and who take steps to help end the suffering of animals in laboratories

The Humane Cosmetics Act was first introduced in March 2014 by Congressman Jim Moran (D-VA) and then after his retirement the bill was re-introduced with bi-partisan support led by Martha McSally (R-AZ) and Don Beyer (D-VA) in 2015 and again in 2017.  The bill now has 172 co-sponsors and has been referred to the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health.

"Animal testing for cosmetics is cruel and unnecessary. I am honored to receive Cruelty Free International’s Legislator of the Month Award for my leadership with the Humane Cosmetics Act and will continue to advocate against the inhumane treatment of animals.” said Congresswoman McSally.

Cruelty Free International campaigns have revealed that consumers around the world support a cruelty free cosmetics market place - and the United States is no exception. Numerous polls show that US consumers want cruelty free cosmetics - and support laws that reflect their values and prohibit senseless cruelty to animals.

The Humane Cosmetics Act [HR 2790], This provides a perfect opportunity for the US to align cosmetics policy with modern science, global trends and consumer expectation. The time has come for the US to consign animal testing for cosmetics to the history books.

If you are a US Resident you can help by contacting your US Representative to ask that they support and cosponsor the bill. We've made it simple - just follow this link.
