Time to tell the truth about animal experiments

The Home Office is responsible for issuing licences to researchers to allow them to carry out animal experiments in Britain.  But the law stops it from sharing any information about these licences with the public - even when they are funded by public money.

Cruelty Free International has campaigned for many years for more information to be made available about the use of animals in laboratories, so that we can have an informed public debate about animal experiments.

Thanks to our work, the previous Home Office Minister promised to change the regulations to end the secrecy shrouding animal experiments, pledging that details could be given under Freedom of Information rules.

But the Home Office failed to implement this pledge before the General Election, instead promising to carry out the changes after the election.

Cruelty Free International Director of Policy, Dr Nick Palmer said, “Every year millions of animals are used in experiments in the UK, but the public knows very little about what happens to animals in research laboratories - or why.  It’s time for the UK Government to put its promise of greater transparency into action.”
