Another US state is on the way to ending cruel cosmetics
Cruelty Free International applauds Senator Linda Holmes for introducing a bill that if passed will prohibit the sale of new animal-tested cosmetics in Illinois.
For more than 50 years, animals have been used in painful tests to assess the safety of certain chemicals used in cosmetics products. Today’s modern alternatives, which are cheaper, faster, and can better predict human reactions, are widely available and are now required in more than 30 countries around the world.
If bill SB0241 passes through the Senate it will mean cosmetic companies in Illinois will have to use existing, proven, humane alternatives to animal methods for testing new ingredients used in cosmetics.
Cruelty Free International is pleased to work alongside the Animal Welfare Institute to help advance this bill.
Monica Engebretson, our North America Campaign manager, said, “Multiple polls show that US consumers support ending animal testing for cosmetics. Until a national ban on animal testing is in place, states need to continue to lead the way with bills like SB0241. Many companies now support globally consistent rules on this issue and should welcome state-level advances as much as their consumers do.”
