The New York Cruelty Free Cosmetics Act will prohibit the sale of any cosmetic product that has been tested on animals after the date of enactment.
For more than 50 years, animals have been used in painful tests to assess the safety of certain chemicals used in cosmetic products. Today there is no reason for animals to be harmed for the sake of cosmetics. Not only are there thousands of available ingredients that have a history of safe use and do not require new testing that can be used in cosmetic products, but many non-animal methods have been, and continue to be, developed for testing brand new ingredients. These modern non-animal methods are increasingly cheaper, faster, and more predictive of human reactions than antiquated animal tests.
New York City is seen globally as one of the major capitals of fashion and beauty, and New York State has the third largest economy amongst US states, equivalent to the 12th or 13th largest economy in the world. Enacting change in New York will make a real difference and would be hailed internationally.
Passage of the New York Cruelty Free Cosmetics Act would create a blueprint for national success and would have international significance.
