We call on other UK parties to do the same
This week we welcome Labour Party proposals to review legislation that currently governs animal testing in the UK with a long-term view to phase-out all animal testing. The plans are part of the party's manifesto on animal welfare published on Wednesday.
The document includes an immediate end to tests which cause 'severe' suffering, as well as a commitment to improve transparency around animal research and support the development of non-animal methods.
A recent poll commissioned by the government revealed that 66% of people in the UK are concerned about use of animals in research. With latest Home Office statistics showing the number of UK animal tests has remained largely static for decades, we are pleased to see Labour committing to modern human-relevant science, listening to public opinion and advancing humane testing methods.
Our Director of Public Affairs, Kerry Postlewhite, said: “We welcome the proposals in Labour’s new animal welfare plan for animals used in research, which are in keeping with 21st Century science and public opinion. With progress being made in countries like the Netherlands, which is working to phase-out animal testing by 2025, and with similar pledges being made by US Democratic presidential candidates, it is time for the UK to lead the way. We call upon other UK parties to make similar – or better – proposals and end the suffering of animals in laboratories.”
