Across the globe, millions of animals are suffering and dying in laboratories.
The world’s most reliable global figure to date estimates that at least 192.1 million animals were used for scientific purposes worldwide in 2015. This includes an estimated 207,724 tests using dogs and 158,780 tests using monkeys.
Country specific data paints a bleak picture for dogs, monkeys, rabbits, cats, hamsters, and other animals in laboratories. In the UK, there were a total of 3.06 million procedures on animals in 2021. In the EU, 46% of tests caused moderate to severe suffering in 2020. Meanwhile, in the US, there was a 6% increase in animal testing in 2021, and we estimate that at least 14.6 million animals are used for research each year – making them the second largest user of animals in the world, second only to China.
Whilst the statistics are shocking, what is more harrowing is the fact that each figure represents a living, breathing, feeling individual, with complex social, mental, and physical needs, unnecessarily suffering in the name of science.
