We lead discussions on ending animal testing.

We are continuing our work to end animal testing around the world with seminars and information stands, as part of our sponsorship of the 13th World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences, in Rio de Janeiro, from August 31 to September 4.

We will be giving three presentations at the event, on our Replace Animal Tests (RAT) List, the role of animal sentience in influencing legal change, and the reporting of animal testing in Europe, through non-technical summaries.

We will also be sharing information on:

The Humane and Existing Alternatives in Research and Testing Sciences (HEARTS) Act, U.S. legislation that we have supported to encourage the use and development of humane, and effective alternatives to animals in experiments funded by the National Institutes of Health;

The American Bar Association’s resolution on animal testing

The role of non-animal testing methods in delivering the United Nations’ 2030 agenda for sustainable development

Our assessment of the European Union’s roadmap to phase-out animal testing and an overview of animal testing in the EU over the last 20 years;

The shocking impact of gavage, (the process of force-feeding animals, as used in the production of foie gras), in animal testing;

The use of two species in pharmaceutical toxicity testing

The theme of the 2025 Congress, ‘3Rs Integrating 3 Worlds: Human, Animal and Environmental Health’, highlights the connection between our health systems and the importance of adopting research methods that are both scientifically sound and ethically responsible. The Congress is being held in the Southern Hemisphere for the very first time.

The program features over 100 symposia, workshops, and lectures, where established experts and emerging voices will share advances in non-animal methodologies, regulatory science, ethical research practices, and educational initiatives.

Since its inception in 1993, the World Congress has convened leading scientists, policymakers, and innovators from around the world to discuss solutions to the use of animals in the life sciences.

Our Head of Public Affairs for North America, Monica Engebretson, who will be part of our team in Rio, said, “We are honored to be sponsors of this landmark event and look forward to supporting continued progress toward a future where science is not only effective but also ethical and sustainable. Our presentations and displays cover many of the most important issues in animal testing, and we are excited to share our groundbreaking research and ideas with so many people from around the world. Conferences like these are a fantastic opportunity to promote the use of non-animal methods within the scientific community, and to work with multiple stakeholders to overcome barriers to ending animal experiments worldwide.”
